Winter Boredom

Monday, January 17th, 2011

I’m bored!

I miss walking outside - without having to watch my stride on the icy sidewalk.

I miss being able to bbq at a moments notice!

I miss sitting on my back porch at 4pm, soaking up the warm summer sun!

I miss having a ton of things to do (not that I’d do them, just that there are options!) that don’t include having to bundle up!

So last night I took out my dusty Wii, and popped in Wii Dance Fun songs I recognize and can see along with, and heart pumping exercise.  Dancing is fun! Dancing in my feety pajamas around my living room wondering if anyone can see me from the street… even more fun!

This morning was grocery shopping day.  While bbq is still out of the question (hubby refuses!) many other meals aren’t — stews, soups, oven-baked.  So making out my menu this week I opted for a few meals that are healthy and yummy (and uses new-to-me products!)

While out shopping, I swear the main thing I heard from moms all over (maybe because the kids have off today?) was …….. “They’re driving me nuts! They’re bored!”

So that got me remembering when I was little…. I don’t remember being bored! I don’t.  Well, obviously as a teen I do….but I think from 13-19 you are just bored cuz you can be..and you know it annoys your parents!!  We did play-dough, shrinky dinks, those glass suncatchers you had to bake (my fav!,) oven mitt making.  I even had a knitting machine (granted it only did round things like socks and scarves, but it kept me busy all day.)  The Goodie Jar has some great Make Your Own Jewelry Kits. From snowman pins to charm bracelets!

Adventures in Spaghetti Squash

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Made myself a spaghetti squash for lunch.  It was the 2nd half of the one I made the other day.  (place in baking dish, add 1/4 cup water, cover with wrap, nuke 12 min)  This time I scooped it into a bowl and added 1tbsp ea: br sugar, butter, maple syrup.  Yummy!  However, it’s wayyyy too watery.  About halfway thru the bowl and I’m drowning and, just, ew!

I read a few tips that included dumping it into a colander and letting it sit a while.  And giving it a quick saute, plain just spray the pan with Pam.  I’ll try them. I also read baking them can make them less watery.  But I like nuking mine—  I like that I can have a delicious low-carb, low-cal treat in 15 minutes.  Let’s face it, If I have to bake it just how many other things do you think I’ll eat while waiting for the 90+ minutes to pass. A lot, that’s how many!

I also found this page while searching for the less watery answer.  I am LOVING the significantly lower carb and calorie counts.  I guess I know what I’ll be having instead of pasta from now on!  Will I miss pasta? Um, heck yeah, but now I can make pasta something I look forward to at a restaurant!

Pasta Comparison

One cup of cooked enriched spaghetti yields 221 calories, 1.3 g of fat, 43 g of carbohydrate and 2.5 g of fiber. Pasta does provide more B vitamins. If you have diabetes or are watching your weight and carbohydrates, you can save 179 calories and 33 g of carbohydrate by eating a cup of spaghetti squash instead of a cup of pasta.

I recently joined a weightloss challenge. One of the mini-challenges is to drink six 8oz glasses of water a day.  Luckily that one is pretty easy for me.  I use my 25oz Large Sports Bottle by Tupperware.  2 fills and I’m done! To see more Tupperware Tumblers & Beverage holders, visit My Tupperware Website!

I’ve also challenged myself to discover new vegetables. Ok, I admit ANY vegetables will be new to me. I’m not really a veggie eater….. or so I thought!  My recent finds are:

Acorn Squash - Maple Roasted Acorn Squash Recipe

Zucchini & Yellow Squash

Spaghetti Squash - cut in half, scoop out seeds, place in micro dish with 1/4 c water in dish, cover. Nuke 12 minutes.  I had mine with spaghetti sauce just last night.  Will try the other half with butter, brown sugar and maple syrup!!!
